Summary
I designed and managed 2 bath toy projects from start to finish. They are/were sold in Target, Walmart, Walmart.com, Amazon.com and Munchkin.com
ABOUT
Scrubby & Squeegee inspire good, clean fun in the tub with penguin-themed cleaning tools. This adorable bath toy set includes a scrubber and a squeegee, perfect for scrub-a-dub-dubbing your way through the bath time routine.
DESIGN PROMPT
Designing a cleaning bath toy set
The prompt of the project was designing a set of bath toy that includes squeegee within the price of $6.99. This toy set inspires kids to learn cleaning while having fun during the bath time.
DESIGN PROCESS HIGHLIGHTS
Exploring various themes with sketches
I initially brainstormed various ideas, then sketched set of toys with different themes. This allows our design team to see how the toys would sell in store as a set.
Evaluating ideas with physical mock-ups
After the sketching phase, I made physical mock-ups of favorite themes using foam board and existing toys. This helped me evaluating size and ergonomics of the design.
Design challenge after design review
After reviewing design directions with marketing team and costing team, we found 2 problems. First, creating 3 different molds would make production cost too high to meet the target price. Second, the overall shape of squeegee is hard to recognize what it is. Therefore, I changed the design that mimics the silhouette of common squeegee shape and use the same shape for the scrubby to share the same mold.
Creating control drawing for engineers
I created a technical drawings so the engineer team can build the manufacturable 3D file. I constantly communicated with engineer team to make sure the product functions and looks as I intended. Below image is part of the initial control drawing.

DESIGN PROMPT
Designing school of fish bath toy set
The prompt of the project was designing school of fish theme bath toys that includes 3 fish student characters and a school boat within the price of $6.99. This toy set encourages parents to teach the phrase "School of fish" to kids while making their bath time fun.
DESIGN PROCESS HIGHLIGHTS
Exploring different shapes with sketches
I sketched various shapes of fish characters and boat. This allows our design team to see how the toys would sell in store as a set.
Creating presentation board for
Target client meeting
After we choose our favorite design from sketches, I created design rendering using Adobe Illustrator and photoshop and put together the presentation board for client meeting.
Design challenge after the client meeting
Client liked the overall idea but our marketing team pointed out the fish characters don't look like fish nor cute. It was mainly because the fish base was wide to make them stand on its own in the boat. Therefore, we decided to compromise the standing function and made fish stay in the boat with spread out fish fin. This way we could make the fish tail look more like fish and overall design cuter.
